Cape Town to Windhoek Overland Safari - 12 Day

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1:
Johannesburg or Cape Town to Upington

Departing Johannesburg or Cape Town, we head to Upington, spending the evening camping on the banks of the Orange River.

Day 2:
Fish River Canyon

The scenery that greets you this morning as we cross into Namibia will impress you. You will immediately notice the stark change in landscape. After settling up camp and exploring the area, we enjoy watching the sunset over the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world.

Day 3:
Aus

This morning you have time to explore the Canyon before we take a relaxed drive to Aus, a small town on the edge of the desert. We camp at Klein Aus, a farm set amongst the rocky hills. There is the opportunity to go hiking and keep alert for sightings of the famous ‘desert horses’.

Day 4:
Luderitz

We make our way to the ghost town of Kolmanskop that lost the battle with the sand when its inhabitants left many years ago. A guided tour through this eerie town gives us an insight to what life was like in this very harsh climate. We continue onto Luderitz itself, the port and fishing town. Here you can do an optional boat trip on the harbour (weather permitting) to see penguin colony and perhaps even dolphins. We return to Aus for the night.

Day 5:
Sesriem (Day 5 & 6)

We drive north towards Sesriem. The scenery as we approach the dunes will leave you breathless. We venture into Naukluft Park for great photo opportunities. The dunes of Sossulvlei are some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Take the challenge and see if you can make it the top!

Day 7:
Swakopmund (Day 7 & 8)

This morning we make the journey through the Namib-Naukluft Park and you will see spectacular scenery in colors straight from an artists painting. The lunar landscape appears, as we get closer to the coast. We continue to the oasis town of Swakopmund. You can relax on the beach, go deep sea fishing, visit the seal colony, quad biking, parachuting or sand boarding on the dunes for a close up look at the landscape. The evening brings an opportunity to try some of the popular nightlife in this town.

Day 9:
Cheetah Farm

Leaving the coast behind we head inland and northwards to our overnight stop at the Cheetah Farm. Here you have a unique experience awaiting you. We camp right next to the Cheetah Enclosure and have the chance to see these majestic animals close up. The brave can get very close as we feed the most effective ‘watch dogs’ in the world at the main house.

Day 10:
Etosha National Park (Day 10 & 11)

Today we enter the vast Etosha National Park. Centered around the Etosha Pan, this park is home to large populations of predators and is a sanctuary to black rhino, white rhino, large herds of elephants and many other animals and birds. Our days are spent on game drives and at night you have the opportunity of game viewing at the amazing waterhole on the edge of the camp. Animals from the smallest to the largest come to the waterhole to drink, it’s up to you how long you want to watch.

Day 12:
Windhoek

We head south to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital where your tour ends late afternoon.
