A fascinating country in eastern Southern Africa, consisting of the
world's oldest desert - the Namib Desert, atmospheric and scenic landscapes,
huge game reserves and quaint towns.
Country Info: Formerly known as South-West Africa, Namibia achieved
independence in 1990. The country has rich deposits of non-fuel minerals,
uranium, diamonds as well as zinc, copper, silver and other metals - one
of the cornerstones of its fairly stable and growing conomy. Namibia was
also the first country in the world to include the protection of the environment
as part of the constitution.
Main Attractions:
Etosha National Park
One of the great game parks of Africa, covering 22 270 km². It is
home to vast animal species, including endangered animals. The landscape
has interesting features like the large salt pan at the centre of the
park
Fish River Canyon
The second largest canyon in the world. Features a dramatic rift in the
earth, a sudden, immense tear of half a kilometre deep in a rocky landscape
that stretches on for 161km
The Namib Desert
Estimated to be around 80-million-years old, the desert features the world's
highest sand dunes and is one of the country's biggest attractions
The Skeleton Coast
Access to this scenic, yet desolate stretch of the coast, is restricted.
Covered in mist, lie the shipwrecks of unlucky seafarers of old - the
region makes for great photography
